early exploration and influences
For these pieces, I wanted to ground the illustration in the architectural language of 1920s Montreal while letting it bloom into something warmer and more whimsical, drawing inspiration from Art Nouveau ornamentation and the layered, lived-in magic of Howl’s Moving Castle.
I approached the space as a kind of enchanted cabinet of curiosities, tall, windowless stone walls rising into shadow, cluttered with artifacts that feel collected over a lifetime.
using dramatic, cinematic lighting to guide the eye and create a sense of intimacy amid the chaos. The composition balances environmental storytelling with character-driven warmth, allowing the banter and quiet affection between Agnes and Havelock to exist naturally within the space, while the framing elements echo the decorative language of the era and leave room for potential foiling and print embellishments.
